How to Explain Ramadan to Kids: Simple Words for Every Age
Explain Ramadan to kids: short, honest answers to the questions children ask – and small moments that help them feel Ramadan in their heart.

To explain Ramadan to kids, keep it simple: Ramadan is the special month when the Quran was first revealed, when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset to grow closer to Allah, give more, be kinder and pray more – and it ends with the celebration of Eid. Then adapt the details to your child’s age and let them live it through small roles and traditions.

What is Ramadan, in one sentence
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar – the month the Quran was first revealed – when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, pray more, read the Quran, give charity and try to be their very best. Children understand stories and feelings better than definitions, so start with this sentence and then tell the story.
“The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance for mankind.”
Quran 2:185
What to say by age
Ages 3–5
“Ramadan is a special month for Allah. Grown-ups don’t eat during the day to thank Allah and remember people who are hungry. At night we eat together, and at the end we have a big party called Eid!”
Ages 6–9
Add the Quran: “Ramadan is when the angel Jibreel first brought the Quran to the Prophet ﷺ. We fast to become more patient and more grateful, and Allah gives a huge reward for every good deed.”
Ages 10+
Talk about taqwa (being mindful of Allah), the five pillars, the last ten nights and Laylat al-Qadr, zakat al-fitr – and invite them to set their own Ramadan goals.
Parent tip
Use the calendar on your wall: show them the moon, count the days to Ramadan together and explain that Islamic months follow the moon.
“Why do we fast?”
This is the question every child asks. Three answers work well, from simplest to deepest:
- Because Allah asked us to – fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam.
- To feel grateful – a little hunger reminds us how many blessings we have, and how others feel every day.
- To become stronger inside – fasting trains us to control what we say and do, not just what we eat. The Quran says fasting was prescribed “so that you may become mindful of Allah” (2:183).

“Do kids have to fast?” Not until they reach puberty. Younger children can practice with half-days if they want to – read our guide At What Age Should Kids Start Fasting?
“Can we drink water?” No – the fast means no food and no drink from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib). That’s why we wake up for suhoor.
“What is iftar?” The meal when we break the fast at sunset, usually with dates and water, like the Prophet ﷺ did.
“What is Laylat al-Qadr?” A night in the last ten nights of Ramadan that is “better than a thousand months” (Quran 97:3). We pray and make lots of dua, hoping to catch it.
“Why does Ramadan move every year?” The Islamic calendar follows the moon, so Ramadan comes about 11 days earlier each year. In 2027 it is expected to begin around February 8.
